Querida Anne,
Thanks for another great post, eat your heart out “Kate Adie”. I really enjoy the openness of your posts, particularly the honesty of your reflections, which give us a unique insight into your time in Brazil. I am hoping along with my husband Keith to visit Brazil next July as a member of Joe’s Pilgrimage group. Whoops must not say pilgrimage too loudly as Keith thinks he is going on a holiday ! Well I did if I am honest, it was a bit of a shock to me when I overheard Joe describe it to someone as a “pilgrimage.”
I am glad you are taking the opportunity to see other locations, after reading your description of the city of Venda Nova I am hoping to smuggle a detour in somehow. I would love to hear of any other “definitely do” whilst here. The Feijoada Festa sounded great fun, I hope you did not have too many revellers to haul out of the hedge and that we will soon see some incriminating photographs.
Tchau ! Margaret

Hi Anne,

Glad to hear you are engaging so much in local life. Say Hi to Beth and Sr Regina for me. Mary my wife and I were part of the 2005 visit with JH to Brazil which is one of my most memorable. Recently I have joined the trustees group and will be looking out for you, and catching up with your blog entries.

Best wishes, X David and Mary Hall

Hi Anne

Many congrats on another superb blog, I read it feeling a bit like I was on an emotional rollercoaster! You are living so many different experiences and all in one week! Phew! It is wonderful to read...the most excitement I have on a Saturday afternoon is Morrison's..to while away the hours in! I am very envious!

Have another 'wonderfilled' week and please say a big hi to Jackie from us!

Hi Anne,

I really enjoy reading your blog - it is lovely how you describe the big and the little picture. There are many lessons to be learned living and working in a new environment, culture and country. Often our deepest insecurities coming rushing to the fore and the defence mechanisms that we cultivated back home just don't seem to work and we often feel exposed and very vulnerable. Many teachers here in the UK create a hardened front to present to the children that they teach but I am not sure that it is very effective. The best teachers are those who are themselves, comfortable in their own skins. But in a new and unfamiliar place, doing new and unfamilar things with new and unfamiliar people, in an unfamiliar language, our self confidence can take a real bashing and we feel adrift from all the securities that we relied on back home. It is tough - be gentle with yourself.

HI Anne,

It is great to get a flavour of your experience to date. You have a lovely style of writing - makes for easy and interesting reading. What comes through in your blog is the paradox that is Brazil. All the troubles, joys hardships, deep humanity and inhumanity that characterises life in the communities that all takes place in one of the most beautiful cities in the world that is full of vibrance and energy. Jackie will be joining you in the next few days - it will be great to see her again. Autumn is beginning to make her presense felt here in the UK - the leaves are entering the final stages of life. Brazil are playing football against England in early November - you must get to see the game in one of the local bars - it will be quite an experience. I am really looking forward to reading your next blog entry. Um grande abraco, Joe

Hi Anne,
Just a little introduction about myself. I have recently retired from teaching in a very small village school in Chipping and have been privileged to become a trustee of "Volunteer in Brazil." I know Joe Howson well as a Governor of the School, a parishioner and best of all as a friend. Next July I along with my husband are visiting Brazil as members of a group led by Joe Howson.
We are both frantically trying to prepare for the visit by studying the Portuguese language, and are currently under the tutelage of Joe McCrave a young fellow who visited the project earlier this year. I think you may have met him during your training day !
But enough of me because I want to write about how much I am enjoying your great newsy posts. They give such an insight into life at the project, the locality and the city. Sounds like you are flourishing in the environment.
Already looking forward to the next post.

Oi, professora!

Thanks for writing Anne, I'm enjoying reading it. Sounds like you're handling things really well, and I'm sure you'll be a blessing to everyone at the project. I bet the training day in June seems a lifetime away now, and that your Portuguese (and footballing) skills, are coming on nicely!

Sorry to hear it's another violent time - I know how much strain it puts on everyone there.

Keep updating us...and don't take any nonsense from that mischeivous P group.

Give my love to everyone in Rio,
