Laura’s third blog

Fun in the Project

Last Thursday afternoon we all had a visited by a group from Curaçao. They came by with there band for a bit of a jamming session. All the Kids really enjoyed it all. If they were not dancing they were also playing music. Some of the boys I must admit were madly in love with a few off the girls with the group. It was so funny to watch!!! I don’t really think the ladies minded all too much that the boys were getting a little too excited with dancing with them.

The following day we had a group from France visiting. They were a capoeira group that was staying in the convent, and they wished to do a display for the children. Many of the Children already kneew what Capoeira was, and really loved being able to have a go at it with some pros. The Boys really enjoyed their selves again, being able to show off some of their gymnastic skills, and several off the girls did join in. Just in case no one knows what Capoeira is:  Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that involves movements from martial arts, games, and dance. It was created in Brazil by the slaves brought from Africa.

It was fascinating to watch and the children all seemed to know what they were doing!!! Well some did!!!

I really enjoyed the visits from both groups and I am sure the children did as well. Here are some of my pictures from those two days. I hope you like them!!

Fantastic Blog and photos Laura well done! I would really have loved to shared in that party - it both looked and sounded lots of fun! I have a couple of friends (Johninho’s Mum especially) who could fly out with me to provide a Mamma Mia party if Beth’s interested?!

Pity Joseph wasn’t present on two counts: firstly he’s a brilliant drummer, Jemba included and secondly I think he could have picked up a few new frisbee moves from the ‘upside down’ boys!

Beth looks like a real professional! I bet they thought she was a real music teacher just checking their strings out! Beautiful photo Beth.

I know why there wasn’t one of you trying it out Laura! I bet you didn’t need to as you know you can do anything now you have been hangliding!!

We have spoken a few times to Joseph and he is having a great time in Cristino Castro but hasn’t had computer access to blog, so we will have all that to look forward to soon, as he is due back with you Thursday 7th May before he leaves Rio on Saturday 9th! The weeks are ‘flying’ just like you!

    Keep Up The Brilliant Blogging!

    Love Rose

Laura is a fantastic volunteer and her photographic skills are giving us these wonderful images that will preserve the moments of the project. Thanks Laura! You all need to see how Laura is confident and enjoying teaching children … She is doing very well!

Rose, when could we mark the Mama Mia party? Did you know Brazilian loves parties? We are always ready for parties and now you offer, we will charge …. I wish I could play the berimbau! It is so difficult! But this is another use for pictures… you can pretende… almost a prove…

Joe, where are you? (I know, in Piauí …) We miss you! Yesterday, in our meeting, Mônica said that the Volunteer-in Brazil has a problem: ” when we begin to have an emotional bond with some volunteers, they are going away and we feel much nostalgia… Joe is one of those volunteers … But next week Joe will be with us for two more precious days!

Lot’s of love for you all

    Yo Laura
    A very funky report.
Music and dance is obviously a big part of Rio and Brazilian culture, and great to see that the children are getting plenty of this cultural exposure!
Thank you for your photo’s which continue to offer interesting Wallpapers for my computer when the work day get a little tedious.
They will form a fabulous record of your time in Rio, and I hope you are able to use them to develop your career in photography.
I hear that the UK is due a warm summer according to the forecasters, but with some heavy downpours, so your time in Brazil will be a perfect preparation for when you get back!
    All the best
    Greg

Hey Beth, thanks for your comments and for the invitation. Unfortunately, (or fortunately for you anyway!) I am soon going to have a full diary looking after Brazilian Joe when he arrives home, so I can’t fly out just yet!

However, I know there is another Brazilian Joe (Howson) on his way to you in July, so I will train him up and send him out ’singing and dancing’ to provide you with a Mamma Mia Party! Pierce Brosnan Eat Your Heart Out!

    Hi Darling
Just got back fom working in France. I had a great time but missed the contact. I believe you had a long chat with mum on skype. Thank goodness for these mysterious things.
It was great to see your new blog and all the pictures. Trust me! tell Beth she must NEVER try Archery she’s got the bow and arrow back to front. Robin Hood she ain’t!!!!!! What a great party although the young boy needs to grow a few inches before he gets in trouble.
Keep up the great blogging, it’s all making a great story.
Time seems to have flown by so quickly and although I am sure you have made some wonderful friends and had some great adventures, it will be brilliant to see you soon. Not long to go now.
    all our love from home
    Dad xxxxx

Brilliant idea Rose!! I woud love watch a Mama Mia performance of Joe Howson!

Hi George! See how the Brazilians are creative! If you turn the bow to one side, turn into a tool, and turn even if the other and becomes a weapon! But I am not good at none of two directions, so Robin Hood is still the best.

    I can’t wait for Laura’s next blog!
    Love for all
    xx

  7. Joe Howson Says:

    Hi Laura,

Thanks for the story & photos - great to see the young people having a fun time. I believe you had a lovely time in Vitoria with Beth and her family - Beth is just wonderful! Joe M will be back with you in the next few days with lots of stories from the Cristino Castro and Joe & Polly will arrive in Rio a day or so after Joe M leaves for the UK - so lots happening on the volunteer front. I am sure you will enjoy showing Joe & Polly around the project and introducing them to all involved with the programme. I am not going to comment on the Mama mia party for fear that it may give the story energy.

    Un grande abraco,

    Joe
